STRAUSS
Ein Heldenleben (‘A Hero’s life’)
For his orchestral rollercoaster ride ‘A Hero’s Life’, Richard Strauss cast around for a heroic figure to depict, and settled on someone pretty close to home – himself. This excitable musical autobiography brims with panache but matures to a place of noble reflection.
If Strauss’s piece is a humbling glimpse of life’s journey, so too is Beethoven’s third Piano Concerto, created during the agonising early stages of his deafness but resounding nonetheless in its own heroism and defiance.
The Pre-concert talk is free to all ticket holders of this concert and will take place in The Barbour Room at 6.30pm.
