Tormented by dark, urgent depressions and severe financial problems, Mozart decided in the summer of 1788 to write three seminal symphonies. But the third, numbered forty-one, wasn’t depressive or introverted. Instead, it was a continuous stream of infectious and abundant musical joy – all the more uplifting after the dense thought of Strauss’s ‘Metamorphosen’ and the radiant calm of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto.
